On 12th October 2009 the children of St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School in Coppull took part in a sponsored hymn sing in memory of a former member of staff, Mr Frank Cheetham who sadly passed away in late September 2009.
Frank’s favourite charity was CAFOD and he spent a great deal of his life raising funds for the charity. He was a very accomplished church organist and always donated any fees he received straight to CAFOD.
He was a former Deputy Head of St Oswald’s School but had spent the last ten years returning to us as a supply teacher. He was very well respected and much loved by all the children and staff and is very greatly missed.
Frank’s great love was music and he played the piano and organ for us here in school, always with great enthusiasm and aplomb! His love of music was very infectious. When it came to deciding the most appropriate way of raising money in memory of him, a sponsored hymn sing was the natural choice.
The children sang non stop for over 1 hour and managed to sing 27 hymns. We ended by singing our school anthem, “Siyahamba”. We raised a staggering £1000 which, for a school of 129 pupils was an amazing effort. The money was sent to CAFOD but, rather than just sending the money on its own, we purchased appropriate gifts of 50 teach someone to read and 25 music sets for schools.
The certificates were presented to Frank’s widow and members of his family at a special Advent assembly.
