On its first day in June 1993 the CAFOD charity shop in Crosby, Merseyside, took £160. Now, 18 years on, the shop has raised over half a million pounds for our international work. The shop was founded by Tony Redmond, who sadly passed away last year, and a group of fellow CAFOD supporters. It was officially opened on Saturday 12th June 1993 by former CAFOD Director Julian Filochowski who described it as ―’a truly pioneering venture.’
The shop is staffed by around 30 unpaid volunteers who give up their time to sort donations and man the shop floor. Chris Lappine, CAFOD Diocesan Manager for Liverpool, says, “It‘s a shining example of what volunteers can achieve by working together and marvellous to think that people in Bolivia, Burundi and Bangladesh are benefiting from the hard work that goes on in this little shop in St John‘s Road.” It’s the only CAFOD Charity Shop in the whole world!
To celebrate such an achievement, the shop volunteers went to local restaurant ‘Barbacoa’ on Thursday May 12th to celebrate in style!
Harry Wallace, the co-founder and manager of the shop, during his emotional speech, read out a letter from CAFOD Director, Chris Bain which said, “This is quite a memorable occasion and I am delighted to be able to congratulate you and all the volunteers who have worked in the shop from 1993, for all your hard work in achieving over £500,000 total profits. Please do pass on our most sincere gratitude to all the volunteers for their ongoing commitment to CAFOD allowing us to support to our partners overseas who do such amazing work with some of the world’s poorest communities. What a great achievement!”
Crosby-born Bishop John Rawsthorne (Bishop of Hallam diocese and a CAFOD trustee) and James Steel (Director of Finance for CAFOD) also joined us at the meal to celebrate this fantastic accomplishment!
Many, many thanks to all the fantastic volunteers who have made this possible.
