The annual CAFOD Carol service took place last night on December 20th 2012 at St Teresa’s Upholland. Over 800 people braved the rain to attend.
Music was provided by St John Rigby Sixth Form College, St John Fisher High School, St Mary & St Johns Catholic Primary School and St Teresa’s Catholic Primary school. We also had singers from St Edmond Arrowsmith High School in Ashton-in-Makerfield who joined us for the first time. Hopefully the first of many!
The guest speaker was Dom Goggins (CAFOD’s Government & Parliamentary Relations Coordinator) who was born and bred in Leigh in Liverpool Archdiocese. Dom spoke movingly about his trip to the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. He even brought with him his Olympic torch as Dom was lucky enough to be chosen as a torch bearer during the summer Olympic games. The children from St Teresa’s and St Mary & St John’s primary schools were lucky enough to hold his torch during the Carol Service!
During the service, the students performed a beautiful dance to a mesmerising new piece of music composed by James Gresty called ‘Roots and Wings’ which is based on St John Rigby’s chaplaincy logo which comes from the Bible and is about setting people free. The dance was choreographed by Rebecca McDonald and dance students from St John Rigby College.
We were also joined by local MP Yvonne Fovargue (MP for Makerfield) who watched the carol service and then met local parishioners, families, young people and school children from the area!
Afterwards there was also a chance to munch on some scrumptious mince pies provided kindly by Catherine Greaves.
A mammoth thank you to everybody who helped make the night such a success including; James Gresty, Michael Cook, David Wall, Martin Malone, Angela Bryant, Candice McArdle, Carmel Loughney, Andrea Westhead, Pat Boyle, Fr Tony Slingo, Catherine Greaves & Peter and Eileen Holland. Also a gigantic thank you to all the parents, grandparents and family members who came to join us on the night to watch the service! We wish you all a very merry Christmas-we hope that it brings you lots of blessings!
