St Gregory’s win the CAFOD Cup 2013!!!

Throughout June, 31 Catholic Primary schools all over the Archdiocese of Liverpool have been battling it out for a place in the CAFOD Cup Grand Final. Well today, Friday 5th July, the grand final finally took place at St Margaret Mary’s Junior School.

The 6 schools that got to the final were:

• St Mary & St John Catholic Primary School in Wigan who were representing Ethiopia

• St Laurence’s Catholic Primary School in Kirkby who were representing Rwanda

• St Margaret Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Huyton who were representing DRC

• St Bede’s Catholic Primary School in Widnes who were representing Brazil

• St Basil’s Catholic Primary School in Widnes who were representing Bangladesh

• St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School in Lydiate who were representing El Salvador

The winners of ‘group A’ were St Gregory’s who played against the runners up of ‘group B,’ St Laurence’s while the winners of ‘Group B’ St Mary & St John’s faced St Margaret Mary’s (who were the runners up in ‘Group A’) in the semi-final. In the grand final were St Mary & St John’s versus St Gregory’s. It was such a nail-biting game. It was 0 v 0 throughout until the final minutes were St Gregory’s scored a last minute goal to be crowned the CAFOD Cup winners 2013! St Gregory’s received the CAFOD Cup Trophy. All the children who took part also received a certificate each and a CAFOD football for their school!

We were lucky to be joined in the final by Tamiru Legesse who works for CAFOD in Ethiopia. He officially opened the final by showing all the teams a celebration dance which the football teams in Ethiopia use whenever they score a goal! He then asked the children to come up with their own celebration dance every time they scored a goal!

Tamiru also talked about how he used to play football barefoot using an Ethiopian football. He said that many children still do this today! He brought an Ethiopian Football which the children in Ethiopia use to play football! In the final match, the children started the game by playing with the Ethiopian football to see what it is like to play football the “Ethiopian way.”

Tamuri also bought an Ethiopian football shirt for each of the 6 schools taking part which each of the captains wore throughout the tournament! Tamuri also brought a trophy for the runners-up all the way from Ethiopia which he happily presented to St Mary & St John’s who were team Ethiopia!!!!

Children from St Basil’s also brought cards and small gifts for Tamiru to take back for the children in Sebaya (the village involved in Connect2:Ethiopia)!

A big massive THANK YOU to Tamuri, St Margaret Mary’s, Broughton Hall (for lending us goals) and to Paddy, Sean, Dom and Ellie (CAFOD volunteers who refereed and took photos)! As you can see from the photos everyone had a great time!!!!!

  1. It was a great time to be with you all during the match. I was quite surprised to see school children’s commitment to CAFOD works…and of course all teams play their best to be the champion. I would like to congratulate the winner team and hope the Ethiopia team will be the champion next year…good luck
