Benjamin leads the way!

Benjamin has once again led the way for people who need our support overseas!  His parents Fiona and Bruce contacted us:

“For the fourth year in a row he has completed the Liverpool Fun Run.  Now that he is theben-moore grand age of eleven, he decided to move up from the 3km to do the 7km, which he completed in around 44 minutes.  With the support of friends, family and Corpus Christi Parish this year he raised £1,100.  This brings his four-year total to £3,280.

Best wishes

His Proud Parents                                           Bruce and Fiona.”

Isn’t that fantastic!!

Thanks very much, Benjamin!  It makes a huge difference I hear the family also brought a friend along this year to join in which is great too.

For us, this is a great example of not only young people being a shining example to others but of the family nature of the Fun Run!

For those who are still collecting in their sponsorship, thanks very much!  Every pound really makes a difference so please do what you can to get the sponsorship and donations in.

If you would like to find out more about why Benjamin’s support is so important and to support the Ethiopia Food Crisis Appeal, you can do that here.

For everyone, please come and join in the Fun next December as a participants or by giving a bit of time to help it go well on the day.  It’s the same time, and place – 1pm on 27 December at Wavertree Athletics Centre for the 34th CAFOD Fun Run around “The Mystery” Park!  It’s a great occasion!  Contact us for more details 0151 228 4028 liverpool@cafod.org.uk.

CAFOD Liverpool Fun Run a huge success

On 27 December, nearly 400 people came together for the 33rd Annual CAFOD Liverpool

Frank Cottrell-Boyce leads off the 33rd Fun Run

Fun Run in support of CAFOD’s Ethiopia Food Crisis Appeal.

The run, which took place at Wavertree Park, was opened by Liverpool writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce who started the runners, families, walkers and their dogs on their way!  Everyone got around the course safely, with the help of St Julie’s High School Team who came to support the event with their Chaplain Mike Anderson.

It was a fantastic team effort well organised by a new Volunteer Committee shaping things for the future, bringing in new participants and ideas and wonderful photographs from Anna Watkin.  There was also a selection of stalls, face painting and a raffle. The runners were cheered by the fantastic Rioters Jazz Band and a Fancy Dress competition added to the fantastic festive spirit!

Longstanding supporter BBC Merseyside’s Roger Lyon attended the race to offer his support: “It’s a real fun event which I’ve done several times and always enjoyed it. There are so many parts of the world that have difficulties at the moment.”

In 2014, runners fundraised for Sierra Leone’s Ebola Crisis appeal and this year, Kayode Akintola, CAFOD’s representative in Sierra Leone, journeyed to the race to thank the runners for their fantastic support. He said:  “Sierra Leone has officially been free of the Ebola virus for over a year and I would like to say thank you to everyone, and especially the people of Liverpool, who have fundraised to help fund these programmes.”

The CAFOD Liverpool Fun Runs have so far raised over £458,000 for the international development charity supporting its work with overseas partners around the world. Last year, the Fun Run raised an amazing £11,100 for CAFOD’s Refugee Appeal and with the increased turnout, it is possible that the funds raised will exceed even that.

This year, the race was fundraising for CAFOD’s Ethiopia Food Crisis appeal,

Plants and crops are struggling to grow in arid conditions

Severe Ethiopian drought

where over ten million people in Ethiopia have been affected by a drought caused by two failed rainy seasons due to climate change.  The extreme weather has meant that crops have failed, families are struggling to keep their animals alive and the UK estimates 400,000 children are suffering from malnutrition.

Fr Mike Fitzsimons, a member of CAFOD’s Campaign Advisory Group who has taken part in the race many times, and whose parish in Widnes is currently supporting CAFOD’s partner in Ethiopia, said: “It is an impressive turnout and a great expression of support for those who need our help.”  Fr Mike hopes to visit Ethiopia later this year and to report back on the progress of efforts to address the Food Crisis there at next year’s Fun Run. Now is the time to collect in your sponsorship, folks!

If you would like to support the people of Ethiopia, please do!  Donate to the CAFOD Ethiopia Appeal.  If participants want to know their time, please contact Mike Dooling on mcsaa.mike@gmail.com.

Join Mary and others at the CAFOD Fun Run!

We’re so excited for the CAFOD Fun Run which takes place on Tuesday 27th December at

Sister Pat and Mary Coghlan enjoy the CAFOD Fun Run every year!

Sister Pat and Mary Coghlan enjoy the CAFOD Fun Run every year!

The Mystery, Wavertree Sports Park, Liverpool, L15 4LE.

Mary Coghlan is a long standing CAFOD Parish Volunteer from Christ the King in Wavertree.  Last year, Mary took part in the CAFOD Fun Run along with Sister Pat.  Mary says, ‘I love the CAFOD Fun Run!   Its one of my favourite events of the year and I would recommend it to everyone.  It’s a real family fun day and an opportunity to come together with a variety of people from all over to support an incredibly cause.  Bring your friends, family and your dog, everyone is welcome and its such a lovely day to enjoy together!’

This year’s CAFOD Fun Run will be supporting the Ethiopia Food Crisis, where ten million people are facing a crippling drought.  Severe and extreme weather shifts, part of the El Niño effect, mean that the rains in Ethiopia have failed twice. Farmers are losing their crops, water sources are drying up, and families are struggling to keep themselves and their animals alive. As a result, an estimated 400,000 children are suffering from malnutrition and millions are in need of emergency food and clean water.  Money raised from the CAFOD Fun Run will be used to scale up our work and reach more vulnerable women, men and children with life-saving aid.

Remember you can run, walk or toddle and dogs are welcome too!  If taking part isn’t for you, perhaps enjoying a cup of tea, buying a raffle ticket and listening to entertaining jazz music from local band, The Rioters, would be more enjoyable.  There is something for everyone at the CAFOD Fun Run so please do come along and support this event!

Edwards are celebrating their last day before Christmas with festive mince pies but will be back with a bang on Tuesday 27th December for the annual CAFOD Fun Run!

Ged says, ‘Come and join us at The Mystery, Wavertree Sports Centre.  It’s a really fun event and a great way to bring the family together and continue the festivities after Christmas or even burn off the extra calories!  Anyone can take part in the 3km or 7km routes, you can even bring the dog!’
